The Sattalites at The Windsor Arms Every Wednesday

Nice experience being there to witness the vibe first hand. The Windsor Arms? Reggae? Some how the two just didn't seem to jive in my mind. Then a very wise head pointed out that reggae goes anywhere and it made much sense.
The Sattalites at this establishment seemed so much more appropriate as the night went on, as I listened to Fergus's very distinctive, smooth alto voice doing music that only the Sattlaites know how. Easily this countries longest standing reggae group, this innovative band lead by the master JoJo Bennett, mixes rhythms of yester year with modern dancehall chops, to sweet ballads, to Sattalite standards, to instrumentals, one is entertained all night long.
Two classic standards of Canadiana, the Windsor Arms and The Sattalites, standing the test of time, keeping traditional values mixed with warmth and bringing solid entertainment. I know where my Wednesday nights will be spent…

In 1981, JoJo Bennett and Fergus Hambleton shared an interest in promoting access to music instruction for all. With an emphasis on performing live, they started the Sattalite Music School and allowed anyone with a desire to play music to receive instruction on a 'pay what you can' basis. The school quickly became a centre for reggae enthusiasts, of all ages, who would come and use the instuments and record themselves playing with others.

JoJo arranged local appearances, where various groups of students (of varying skill levels) could get a taste of live performing and called the band the Sattalites. Many alumni of the school are prominent musicians in Toronto’s busy roots music scene.By late 1982, a combination of talented beginners and seasoned pros had gelled into the band that exists to this day.
