IRON sharpens IRON The love for Byron poured out in the room last night. To see so much of Toronto’s TALENTED reggae musicians and artists in one place was almost mind boggling, yet there were also MANY that I missed earlier in the night and many, many, many more that were not even present. These events serve to remind me of why I work at this genre as relentlessly as I do. It struck me (and not for the first or even the last time, as it is a conversation that so many besides me have had) what if every reggae practitioner showed up every week like this to promote each other? A Friday or a Saturday night? Almost everyone in the place is / was a part of this industry in some capacity. One band per week with a boss DJ! Wives, husbands, girl friends, neighbours, reggae heads, musicians, good vibes, good people good food. Playing for Byron last night had most everyone show up. It was a fitting homage to our friend, brother, idren Byron. The energy and love in the room was beautiful to experience and may not show through on the video provided, but being there was a blessing and a treat. I know Byron was flashing that huge smile. This is our “church”! We should be featuring bands and artists weekly with other band members, artists, promoters, producers religiously come patron the event. Weekly! This performance is a Skattalites standard that has been covered numerous times yet certainly not rehearsed by this group yet they learned from each other and improvised nuff and brought the energy! IRON Sharpens IRON Some images from Byron's send off celebration. Respects paid to Byron by Tonya P as she sings a special for her / our friend, gone too soon. I’m Black Every Month
Used to be like black Christmas when February came around All those inventions All those inventors All of the celebrations All of the events All of those school assignments All of those athletic accomplishments All of the musical genii What is it for? Why the need to celebrate black life? Does it bother others in the race to respect the one skin color? When do we celebrate the other colors? Shouldn’t we celebrate humanity daily? Was the abuse of the black race so horrific that this is a need for atonement? Is it a plot of alienation? Am I to be proud for only this month? What do I do about the other eleven months? Am I a viable human life form in January, March, April to December? Are other humans less in February if they are not black? Am I less for the other eleven months? Am I wrong to question? Shouldn’t we all ask these questions? My ‘history’ was written by the European There were many lies told Making black or native people celebrate Columbus is truly degrading There are many pieces missing Does this black history month make me feel more empowered? Does it elevate the human race to glorify this one skin color? Am I a traitor if I don’t choose to celebrate this honor bestowed on my skin? Is this yearly celebration a distraction? Has this yearly celebration improved the relationship with law enforcement? Do the people of Flint feel elevated this February? How about those in Ferguson? Are black people still being murdered by the laws of the land? Are less black men being incarcerated? Has it aided black film makers in Hollywood? Why should black actors care? Is black history taught to law enforcement? Why is there still a need for ‘sensitivity’ training for law enforcement? Are more opportunities being created for or by black countries? Does the GNP rise in black countries during February? Why do we seek validation from those who hate black skin? Are black people to receive better treatment in February? Or are we to expect more resentment? What is the message to black children? What is the message to non-black children? I’m Black Every Month Dr. Roz's The shelter provides women a place to live with their families for 90 days during which they are counseled in a number of areas including legal, obtaining work, housing as well as therapy and workshops for themselves and their often traumatized children. All the proceeds raised are to provide aftercare support services for clients once they leave the facility which is not funded by the government past the 90 day mark. When an abused child comes into Dr. Roz's care, we realize that they have often been greatly affected by the violence they have experienced and/or witnessed. Along with intensive counseling and support, each child’s emotional and social needs are met through creative and therapeutic programming. We ensure that children are given a safe space where they feel free to express themselves. Our goal is to help children put things into perspective during this tumultuous time and prevent the cycle of violence becoming a part of their lives in the future. Whether it is through drumming circles, visual art, creative writing, group work or one-on-one sessions, we see to it that every child is treated with the love and respect that they deserve, while helping them to recognize their own worth. Programs include educational support and advocacy, child welfare agency intervention and support, assistance with securing subsidized daycare and focus on strengthening the parent/child relationship.
